What is now the World's Largest Long Distance Canoe Race was actually started in 1972 simply to fulfill a need. The race really began as a way to train for the grueling Na Wahine O Ke Kai (Women) and the Molokai Hoe (Men) long distance canoe races from the island of Molokai to the island of Oahu.
Named in honor of the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili'uokalani, the first race fell on the Queen's birthday, September 2.
Since those early beginnings, the race has grown tremendously. We now are host to over two thousand five hundred paddlers from all over the world - Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Florida, California and Canada - just to name a few.
And it has grown from a one day event to four days of racing, starting with the always fun warmup - the OC4 races on Thursday. Saturday hosts the main event, the strenuous single-hull canoe races, which covers 18 miles between Kailua and Honaunau. On Sunday we feature double hull, OC1, OC2 and SUP races. And all this action is then followed up with the Kupuna Classic held on Monday - a southward & northward paddle from Kailua-Kona to Keauhou Bay for those over 50 years of age and older.
Held each year on Labor Day Weekend, the fun also includes a torchlight parade on Saturday night, and an awards luau on Sunday.

The wa`a (canoe) history of the ahupua`a of Kailua has been celebrated since time immemorial. The first known accounts of voyagers in Kailua come from mo`olelo (stories) like the 11th century travels of Kauluakalana and Paumakua as well as the scene from the Epic Hi`iakaikapoliopele where Hi`iaka marvels at seeing a koa forest offshore at Oneawa, but is really referring to a multitude of koa canoes. Kailua has a long history of wa`a tradition. Kailua Canoe Club honors this tradition by hosting the annual King Kamehameha Day Regatta in Kailua at the `ili of Kawailoa. As an organization whose lifeblood is the ocean and is active in beach, stream, and park cleanups - Kailua Canoe Club recognizes the importance to malama `aina (care for our environment) and set an example for the community. Please kokua this effort and bring your own reusable bottle to fill at the station, and REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE. Mahalo!

Tarita was shaped by Leighton Look in the late 1990s.
Leighton Look, who had been one of Hui Lanakila's original members, became a driving force for the club. He was an excellent steersman, shaper, coach, and board member of the club, and many would say he embodied the paddler spirit. The Tarita, named after his daughter, became known as one of the fastest koa canoes in the state and led as an example to many others that followed. "He transformed a grass-roots club into a state powerhouse," according to his brother Les Look.
The whole club, old and new members throughout the years, will be coming together to celebrate. Come and learn about the history of Taria, and the rich history of this club.
Kumu Hula Margaret J. Niuli‘i Heine
Kumu Hula Niuli’i Heine will be blessing Tarita. She’s a Native Hawaiian, a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, and received her Business Management Degree at Chaminade University.
She lives on Hawaiian Home Lands in Waimanalo. Niuli’i has danced hula for over 30 years for Na Pua Lei O Likolehua, recently graduated in 2009 as a Kumu Hula (hula teacher), and is now teaching in the halau. She is actively involved in outrigger canoe paddling with over 30 years of experience as a paddler and coach. Niuli’i is an Assistant Vice President at First Hawaiian Bank.
