About Hui Lanakila
Hui Lanakila Canoe Club was established in 1977 by Henry Ayau, Bob Riley, Billy Mitchell and Doug Frias. Ka`iholokai was our first Koa canoe.
Leighton Look became a driving force for HLCC, steering the club both in and out of the wa`a, serving as President for 10 years. Leighton handcrafted our koa canoe Tarita, named after his daughter.
We are thankful to all through the years who have stepped up to leadership position at HLCC, as coaches, and board members, helping to further the clubs mission. A big mahalo to those who have paddled and supported HLCC for many years. Together, you all have made the club what it is today! To those who are joining us for the first time, and those who are considering becoming a member, come and be a part of our growing `Ohana!
Mahalo Nui Loa!
Our Mission
Newly incorporated and seeking 501C3 non-profit status HLCC has become Hui Lanakila.
Hui Lanakila strives to perpetuate the culture and tradition of Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Paddling. Focus is on healthy spirits, minds and bodies, respect for oneself and others. Paddlers must develop a hard work ethic, team building, leadership skills, and concentrate on healthy lifestyles. The discipline and training efforts create benefits for the greater community, as paddlers learn ancient Hawaiian cultural values that affect their lives in positive ways.
Many of our young paddlers have been training from as early as six or seven, overcoming the growing trend of overweight, under active children.
Core values are reflected in our Kanawai or code of conduct.
